PLECTRUM

If you play guitar, you probably always have one in your pocket or wallet - plectrums are small and easily lost! They come in many colors and thicknesses, but what they have in common is the triangular shape with rounded edges. If you haven't encountered one before, it's used to strike the guitar strings. A thin plectrum bends more easily and provides a softer attack, which can be good for strumming on an acoustic guitar. A thicker plectrum gives more control over the strings and a stronger attack. If you play a lot of solos or melodies, it may be easier to hit the right note if you use a thicker plectrum. Similarly, one could say that the thicker the strings you use, the thicker the plectrum should also be to set them in motion. So if you play bass with a plectrum, you really need a thick plectrum!

In general, one can say that the thicker the plectrum, the thicker the guitar sound will also be. That’s why many rock guitarists play with thick plectrums.

There are many techniques associated with playing with a plectrum - from muting, sweeping, strumming, etc., and it can vary which plectrum suits different things. Therefore, many guitarists also have different plectrums that they use in various situations.
