Where does the word HiFi come from
The term Hi-Fi dates back to the 1950s when it was used to describe audio equipment that had such good sound quality that it felt like listening to a band live, making it a costly pleasure back in the 1950s. However, over the years, general technology has improved so that everyone can afford and access good sound and music.
What is HiFi today?
The definition of HiFi is today a bit harder to describe. In the 1970s, the definition of HiFi changed as stereo systems emerged. Suddenly, you could add an extra speaker and channel, which made the music more authentic. The stereo system made such an impression worldwide that people began to refer to Stereo instead of HiFi.
In the early 80s, the CD made its debut worldwide, and with its smart new technology, it made buying music cheaper and easier for the average consumer. The music industry began to earn much more money than it did with the previous vinyl records.
In the 1990s, sound quality took a slight dip with the arrival of Napster and the iPod in the market. By compressing digital audio files into MP3 format, they degraded the data in the process, which contributed to a poorer quality of HiFi.
With the many new streaming services, especially Amazon, Tidal, Deezer, and Qobuz offering lossless streaming, your HiFi gets the optimal sound, essentially the same as on a CD.
