Soprano ukuleles for every taste
The soprano ukulele is a musical instrument also known as the standard ukulele. It is the original ukulele and the smallest of all. It usually has a scale length of 13"/34 cm and an overall length of 21"/53 cm. Children start playing this ukulele due to its size. The soprano ukulele has the brightest sound of all types, and it is probably the sound you associate with ukuleles. It often has between 12 and 14 frets, which imposes some limitations.
Above, we have a wide selection of soprano ukuleles that can be used by both beginners and advanced players. They come in several different colors and various types of wood, with or without a bag.
What does a soprano ukulele sound like?
Although the material or type of wood will play a significant role in the sound, a soprano has a lovely Lights and good sound - the typical Hawaiian ukulele tone.
However, due to its smaller body, it is also the quietest of the sizes, and the ukulele may lack the tempo and warmth you would get from a concert or tenor ukulele. For the most part, a soprano ukulele udg will have the traditional shape, but it is possible to find a 'pineapple' ukulele, which is still a soprano in size but has a wider waist and therefore also a slightly larger sound.
For practicing and small improvised performances, a soprano is a really good choice, but for larger performances, it may prove to be insufficient - unless you invest in a soprano equipped with electronic gear, which is also an option.
Advantages and disadvantages of a soprano ukulele?
With its smaller size and a scale length of 13", a soprano ukulele is ideal for people with smaller hands, although those with larger hands will still be able to master the small instrument. It is also an ideal model for beginners, as the chords are not too far apart, and the strings require less tension to produce a tone. With all this in mind, it is easy to see why a soprano is also one of the best sizes for children who want to learn to play the instrument.
Another advantage is that a soprano ukulele is generally about 10-15% cheaper than a comparable model in a larger size. This is another reason why a soprano is often recommended for beginners, who may not want to commit to playing the ukulele long-term and therefore want something a little cheaper to play for fun. Finally, the soprano has a good size for traveling, as it is so compact.
The biggest disadvantage of a soprano ukulele is that the sound tends to be quieter than a concert ukulele or tenor ukulele. It is also harder for those with larger hands to play it, as the neck is so short and the frets are closer together.
