Ernie Ball 2801 Flatwound Group II Short Scale – warm vintage tone with a smooth feel
Ernie Ball 2801 Flatwound Group II Short Scale is a flatwound set for electric bass, made for players who want that classic, warm and full bass sound without unnecessary finger noise. The smooth surface makes playing quieter and more controlled, giving you a cleaner low end, clearer notes and a more “finished” sound straight from the instrument.
At the core is the flatwound construction with stainless steel, which delivers a stable tone and strong resistance to corrosion—typically meaning longer life and fewer string changes. Sonically, you’re firmly in vintage territory: rounded top end, solid low end and a pleasant, balanced definition that makes them suitable for everything from soul, Motown and jazz to modern pop, where the bass still needs to sit tight and clearly in the mix. For many players, the Group II gauge feels like a comfortable “medium” choice and can feel less stiff than some other flatwounds in the same tension range.
The set is made for Short Scale basses (typically around a 30" scale length, i.e. approx. 76,2 cm), so the length and tension are better matched to the shorter scale than a standard long scale set. If you play short scale and want to avoid too much pull or an incorrect winding point at the tuning machines, this is exactly where the short scale fit makes sense. Note, however, that some players find the E string a bit loose on certain short scale basses depending on the instrument’s construction and setup, so if you prefer a tighter E, a setup adjustment or a heavier gauge may be worth considering.
