Ernie Ball 2738 Cobalt Power Slinky for 5-string electric bass is made for those who want to cut through the mix with more output, more attack and clearer articulation – without having to dial it in with EQ. The patented cobalt alloy reacts more strongly with your pickups, so every note comes through with a punchy, high-output character, a defined low end and crisp highs that make fingerstyle, pick and slap feel more immediate and “on”.
The core is steel (hex core) with a roundwound winding in iron-cobalt wrap wire, delivering a firm, precise response and plenty of harmonic content. You’ll feel it as a tighter attack and more direct dynamics, where overtones and sustain stand out more clearly. Visually, these are classic metal-grey/silver roundwound strings with pronounced windings, and although the set is not coated, the fresh, clear tone typically lasts longer than many conventional nickel sets.
This is a Power Slinky gauge (50–135), offering more physical resistance and a tighter feel – especially a more controlled and often more defined low B. It’s ideal for heavy playing, lower tunings and players who don’t want a “floppy” feel. It’s long scale for standard electric bass, typically 34" scale length (approx. 86.4 cm). Note that the higher tension may require a small setup adjustment (truss rod, intonation and/or saddle height) when switching from lighter sets, and that the very clear/hi-fi sound can come across as bright and aggressive if you’re after a warmer, vintage nickel tone. Cobalt can also be tougher on frets than nickel, so keep an eye on fret wear – especially on instruments with softer frets.
